I May Have Been At Risk. What Symptoms Should I Look Out For?

Symptoms from sexually transmissible diseases ( STDs ) or infections ( STIs ) may include urethral or vaginal discharge, pain on passing urine, blood in the urine or pain or bleeding during sex. Some infections may also present with skin growths or rashes or ulcers around the genital or anal region. You can read more about STD symptoms here.

Do bear in mind that STI symptoms can resemble those from other conditions, like urinary tract infections or bladder stones or prostate inflammation. Our doctor will take a thorough history and examine you before recommending the relevant tests, if necessary.

I Have No Symptoms. Should I Test for STD / STI?

Almost all STDs have a chance of causing infection without displaying any symptoms, even for many months. Yet a patient with no symptoms of infection can still be passing it on to his or her sexual partners. If you or your partner has recently or previously been at risk, it may be helpful to consider testing.

I Want To Test But When Should I Do It?

Depending on the type of infection suspected, and the risk of the exposure, some STD tests may be done as soon as symptoms appear, or within a week from the exposure. For HIV, we recommend testing to be done at least 2 weeks from the time of exposure. 

However, if you believe the risk of HIV or STDs is high, do come in as soon as possible. You may be suitable for HIV PEP and/or DoxyPEP to reduce the risk of infection. Sometimes, treatments may also be offered while awaiting test results.
